What Are the Kerala Backwaters?
The backwaters are a network of brackish lagoons, lakes, rivers, and canals stretching 900 km along the Kerala coast. The most famous stretch runs between Kollam and Kottayam through Alleppey (Alappuzha) — a patchwork of narrow waterways fringed by coconut palms and paddy fields. Life on the banks moves at a pace that is almost impossible to find anywhere else in India.
Choosing Your Houseboat
Kettuvallam (rice barges) are the traditional houseboat style — hand-built from bamboo, coir, and teak without a single nail. They range from basic one-bedroom boats to premium four-bedroom floating villas with air-conditioning, sun decks, and personal chefs. As a rough guide: a one-bedroom AC boat for two adults runs ₹8,000–12,000 per night including all meals. A premium three-bedroom boat with a Jacuzzi costs ₹25,000–35,000. Book at least three weeks ahead in peak season (November–February).
What to Eat on Board
The highlight of any houseboat stay is the food. Expect karimeen (pearl spot fish) pollichathu, prawn moilee, and toddy-shop style tapioca with fish curry. Most houseboats include breakfast, lunch, evening snacks, and dinner in the tariff — the meals are cooked fresh on board using local produce. If you have dietary restrictions, communicate them at the time of booking; good operators accommodate vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free diets without issue.
The Best Route
The classic overnight route departs from Alleppey, navigates through Vembanad Lake, and moors for the night in a quiet canal away from other boats. Dawn on the backwaters — with mist rising off still water and egrets standing in the shallows — is genuinely magical. For a day cruise without the overnight stay, the two-hour trip between Alleppey and Kumarakom is perfectly adequate and far more affordable.
What to Pack
Lightweight cottons and linens are ideal — the humidity is high. Bring reef-safe sunscreen (to protect the water ecosystem), insect repellent, and motion sickness tablets if you are sensitive. Leave large rolling suitcases at your hotel in Kochi; a soft duffel is far easier to manage on board. Mobile coverage varies — carry a book.
